Zoey Roy (Nêhithaw-Denesuline Métis) is a celebrated spoken word poet and community-based educator from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and a Doctoral candidate in Education at York University. She has performed worldwide as a spoken word artist—including at the 2021 World Expo in Dubai—and travelled with the National Youth Orchestra on a 16-date tour across Canada, developing two orchestral spoken word shows: Enough is Enough with the Regina Symphony Orchestra and Ever, Beautiful with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra. Poetry has been a mainstay in her life, helping her stay in tune with the rhythm of her own story while living with c-PTSD and ADHD.
Since childhood, Zoey has focused on community-based arts and education to build strength-based connections, first as a student and now as a teacher. She understands that supporting young people with a space to practice their craft develops their aptitude for self-expression—“a superpower that can save lives, shift cultures, and inspire change.” Today, she leads the Sound Scholars team as a community-based artist, writing and recording songs with students throughout Ontario. She recently completed the Medicine Songs project, a community-based arts initiative featuring Indigenous grandmothers who wrote rap songs and filmed music videos across Canada.
Zoey holds a Bachelor of Education from SUNTEP at the University of Saskatchewan and a Master’s in Public Policy from the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy. She resides in Ottawa, Ontario, with her partner Omar, her son Tayo, and her mom, Maxine Roy. Her accolades include the Queen Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012), Women of Distinction Award (2013), Indspire Award (2015), Saskatchewan Arts Board Award for Education (2022), University of Saskatchewan’s One to Watch (2023), and Ontario’s Arts Educator of the Year (2024).
Meet Omar “OBeatz” Ballantyne: Music Producer, Educator, and Hip-Hop Innovator
Originally from St. Vincent and the Grenadines and now based in Kingston, Ontario, Omar “OBeatz” Ballantyne has been perfecting his craft for 18 years. Starting his musical journey in local church groups, Omar went on to complete a three-year program in Music and Digital Media, followed by independent studies in music production. Drawing inspiration from groundbreaking producers such as Swizz Beatz, Scott Storch, Timbaland, Alchemist, and Diddy, Omar’s sound is celebrated for its innovative use of automation, panning, fades, and effects—resulting in music that offers a deeply immersive listening experience.
In his role with Sound Scholars, Omar specializes in the music and technology side of hip-hop education, showing students how to create their own authentic beats while also producing high-quality instrumentals for classroom projects. His partner in the program, Zoey, focuses on lyric writing and vocal performance. Together, they provide a well-rounded, hands-on curriculum that empowers students to explore the entire creative process: from crafting original instrumentals to writing and performing their own lyrics.
As an integral part of the Sound Scholars program, Omar equips young learners with the confidence, skills, and critical thinking necessary to thrive in today’s digital world. By fusing technology with artistic exploration—and working alongside Zoey’s expertise in lyricism—Omar ensures that students develop a holistic understanding of the creative process and its educational value. For schools seeking to engage students in meaningful, culturally relevant, and technically robust music, language and technology education, Omar “OBeatz” Ballantyne offers a dynamic and impactful solution.
At Sound Scholars, we believe in the transformative power of creative expression—especially for Black, Indigenous, and marginalized youth. Through poetry, hip hop, and Indigenous knowledge, we equip young people with practical tools to navigate challenges, build resilience, and find their voices in both classroom and community settings.
Sound Scholars grew out of a commitment to honor both the African diasporic roots of hip hop and the rich traditions of Indigenous peoples. By blending these cultural influences, we offer a unique program that centers on community, reciprocity, and storytelling—all while meeting the learning outcomes schools require. Our work is about celebrating identity, fostering connection, and empowering youth to channel their creativity into tangible goals.
